Dear Committee:
I
am a MSc student from EE department, and this letter will not be shown to you
if it is not that emergent and important to me or to my classmates, so I really
appreciate your seriously reading.
2012, the fall term begins at September, I and a bunch of my classmates
chose the class ELEG 5431 Video Coding which is taught by Prof. NGAN King Ngi. Except
this course, three other courses have to be taken. However this course – video
coding has taken us a great of time doing 2 small projects and 1 bigger
projects which are all needed to write a report about the programming what we
designed. Comparing with the other courses, the Video Coding can be called time
killer without doubt. Maybe you, dear committee wants to tell us that it is
normal that differences exist among various courses.
Even if it is an important and special course which needed more practice
than the other courses, I can still not understand that why this course
simultaneously won another the most award --- Professor spent less time
teaching in class than any other professors did in the other courses. I remember
that professor were busying having meeting in many different cities, which
results in that we need to adjust our time table to his changeable lecture
time. CUHK is a famous university in the world; will it be sound that the
professors in this university spent much more time in his own study than
teaching his students? I am not saying doing research is not important, but it
does not make sense that teaching time needs to be cut. Isn’t cultivating more
and more elites the priority duty of a university?
Granted that the Professor is a busy bee and the course is special, I am
still deeply confused about the final exam mode. Why do all the questions in
our exams quote from the former exams? This indicates that the students who
cheated in the exam or remember all the former questions can get the higher
score. It is hilarious that a green hand who spent 2 days remembering all the
questions and answers is able to get high score. (I am not insinuating that
people who get higher scores are the cheaters.) How can you use the exactly
same questions to test us? Doesn’t technology develop? Doesn’t teaching
improve?
I
spent a big quantity time on this course, in return, this score just like a
fist into my face. Aren’t the strive equal to gains? Do I need to use tricks to
get high score? This course is brand new to MSc. Considering that
zero-experience on teaching this course to MSc who come from mainland who uses
totally different taught mode with Hong Kong, I deeply suspect the fairness of
the score rank. Shouldn’t teaching be adjustable with students? And please do
not pretend that you have no idea how the education mode in mainland is. With a
transcript has a dark spot on it, It is difficult for us to find a good job or
internship. I sincerely entreat the committee to recheck our grades especially
the Project-Part scores.
Thank you for reading honestly.
